Emerge & See was founded in 2021 by Alana Singleton & Pia Schindler.
Having met at university studying policing in 1999, we went on to graduate from the NSW Police Academy as fresh faced 20 year olds in 2001. We both had successful careers in criminal investigation furthered by a promotion to Sergeant with both serving almost two decades in the NSW Police. Although never working together, we remained close throughout the years.
Alana began experiencing the crippling effects of PTSD both at work and in her personal life.
"I would try and explain to Pia what was happening and how I was feeling but she had no understanding"
It was a couple of years later that Pia began to experience symptoms herself.... "I'm sorry. Now I understand"
From this point, we were able to support each other through the snakes and ladders of a PTSD diagnosis.
We had a common understanding, an awakening that is only understood by those that suffer this injury.
We were both admitted as inpatients at coincidentally the same time in different facilities. It was here, through journalling and individual self recovery and discovery that Emerge & See was born. If we didn't have each other during this process... then where would we be? And if we were struggling then surely others are too.
We wanted to create a foundation that ensured no one was lost, alone, confused or ashamed.
A supportive network to encourage recovery, rehabilitation and optimism to Emerge & See a better future.
