Emerge & See was founded in 2021 by Alana Singleton & Pia Schindler.
Having met at university studying policing in 1999, we went on to graduate from the
NSW Police Academy as fresh faced 20 year olds in 2001.
We both had successful careers in criminal investigation furthered by a promotion to Sergeant with both serving almost two decades in the NSW Police.
Although never working together, we remained close throughout the years.
Alana began experiencing the crippling effects of PTSD both at work and in her personal life.
"I would try and explain to Pia what was happening and how I was feeling but she had no understanding"
It was a couple of years later that Pia began to experience symptoms herself.... "I'm sorry. Now I understand"
From this point, we were able to support each other through the snakes and ladders of a PTSD diagnosis.
We had a common understanding, an awakening that is only understood by those that suffer this injury.
We were both admitted as inpatients at coincidentally the same time in different facilities. It was here, through journalling and individual self recovery and discovery that Emerge & See was born.
If we didn't have each other during this process... then where would we be? And if we were struggling then surely others are too. We wanted to create a foundation that ensured no one was lost, alone, confused or ashamed.
A supportive network to encourage recovery, rehabilitation and optimism to Emerge & See a better future.
We created Emerge & See to guide and support NSW emergency service workers both serving and medically discharged affected by occupational PTSD and other mental health related injuries (MHRI)
_
We will achieve this by doing the following:
Creating a network of support for members to facilitate mate-ship and connection with like-minded people to share positive experiences
Connecting members with relevant services and programs to assist with the treatment and recovery of PTSD & MHRI and provide connections to an awareness of available PTSD & MHRI related services
Offering a holistic recovery approach including wellness, recreational and social connection activities
Raising funds to assist in promoting the awareness of PTSD within the broader community as well as emergency services
Helping to build meaningful connections between members and the community
Providing a safe & positive space to encourage members develop confidence and meaning in their current lives and assist in finding new purpose and direction after a medical discharge
Providing guidance and support to navigate the insurance & legal matters directly related to occupational PTSD & MHRI diagnoses
Providing assistance to members throughout the transition from serving members to medical discharge and beyond
Providing educational and motivational opportunities through seminars and forums offered face to face and online on a variety of subjects relating to PTSD & MHRI and the recovery process
Advocating for Government and organisational change relating to PTSD & MHRI
Provide support and information to families of PTSD & MHRI members
Offering support services for new career pathways
