Meet Billy

Picture
Meet Billy -
Billy has been with Ambulance for 20 years, split evenly between Australia as an Intensive Care
Paramedic and, in his native homeland of Scotland, as a Special Operations Paramedic. Additionally,
he has a ‘wee bit’ of experience as a Combat Medic with 205(V) Royal Army Medical Corps. He is
currently seconded to ACT Rural Fire as an a/g Operations Officer.
Billy has lived experience of Physical and Mental Injury and has recently been informed he can no
longer work on frontline ambulances. Having dealt with numerous surgeries and chronic pain for 7
years, from work related injuries, he now feels able to provide support to others. Billy is, what he
considers to be, on his PTSD growth stage and keen to help others having difficulty with navigating
the injury management minefield.
Emerge and See have helped him when he needed it most and he wishes to pay it forward, by
helping others in similar situations.
From this experience, he learned that HE was the help he needed but others can provide the tools.
There is no one size fits all when dealing with injury but there is something, or someone that can
help. He firmly believes that resilience is not about how you react or deal with a situation but how
you bounce back!
Billy has been working on introducing Presumptive Legislation for First Responders for the past 3
years and has also been involved in setting up a grassroots initiative, aimed at assisting colleagues
from all services.
Having met Pia and Alana early this year, he is excited about joining them and being able to provide
support and guidance for those that need it, when they need it.
“Feel free to reach out, I’m not a psychologist or psychiatrist but I will do everything I can to help
guide you on YOUR recovery journey”.
